LCL Business Process Explained: A Complete Guide from Booking to Delivery

The complete process of LCL transportation can be divided into 6 main stages

 

1、Customer consignment & booking

 Key steps: customer provides cargo information (name, volume, weight, HS code, etc.)

Freight forwarder confirms the route, shipping date and quotes (ocean freight + local cost).

After customer's confirmation, forwarder will make booking to shipping company and get booking confirmation (SO).

Attention: Dangerous goods, oversized goods need to be declared in advance, otherwise they may be rejected.

Try to avoid temporary cancelation after booking, otherwise it may generate loss of cabin fee.

 

2、Goods warehousing & customs clearance

Key steps:

Customers send the goods to the designated warehouse according to the requirements of SO (or arrange door-to-door pickup).

The warehouse measures the volume/weight of the goods (the basis for billing).

Freight forwarder arranges export customs clearance (packing list, invoice, contract, etc.)

3、Container loading & sea transportation

 Key steps:

The container is towed to the dock to load the ship, the forwarder provides ** bill of lading (B/L)** to the customer

The ship sails to the destination port according to the established route (can be tracked throughout)

Warehouse will be more than one goods combined into the same container (professionally known as “LCL”)

 

4、Customs clearance at destination port

Key Steps

Upon arrival of the goods, the agent of the port of destination will handle the exchange of documents and customs clearance procedures.

Payment of customs duty/VAT (some countries can arrange DDP terms to be paid by the consignor).

After customs clearance, the goods will be transferred to the warehouse for unpacking.

 

5、Decontainerization & Pickup

Key Steps

Warehouse unpacking, sorting goods according to tickets

Customer picks up the goods with the arrival notice and customs clearance documents.

If delivery is required, truck delivery can be arranged (additional costs incurred)

 

6、Terminal Delivery
